Day by day.

Day 1 · Tea country to Meru

Day 1: Tea, twists & tender lamb Early morning: Windows down, Mount Kenya ahead Pickup at 0600 hrs and the road opens. Leave Nairobi behind and head north through Thika, where the pineapple farms roll out on both sides and the city finally lets go of you. Your driver guide has a playlist and zero shame about singing along. In Murang’a, the road trip takes a bow. Settle into a grand hotel dining room for a slow, generous breakfast, the kind that sets the tone for the whole journey. Sit back, refuel and let the day begin properly. Then the scenery turns poetic. Roll through Kiriaini and on to Othaya, where tea farms spread across the hills in endless emerald rows, stitched together by narrow lanes and wrapped in morning mist. Roll the windows down, breathe in the fresh, leafy air and let your camera work overtime. This is Kenya’s tea country showing off. Next come the famous winding roads of Murima, bend after bend, hill folding into hill, every curve a new postcard. Your driver guide slows down at the best viewpoints, so keep your phone ready and your seatbelt fastened. The road does not rush, so neither should you. By now, the appetite has arrived. In Murima, lunch is tender lamb, juicy, smoky and so soft it practically falls apart. Order big, sit back and let the road catch up with you. Calories do not count on road trips. Then back on the road for the stretch to Meru, with the slopes of Mount Kenya rising beside you. The air turns cool, the hills get greener and by the time you roll into Meru, everything feels lighter, earthy and alive. Check in at your hotel, drop your bags and take a breath. Dinner is a proper Meru welcome: a steaming stew, irio and mukimo, and tea that actually warms you up after a day on the road. Now, Meru after dark. Freshen up and head out for dunda at one of the town’s lively clubs. The music is loud, the energy is warm and the locals are friendly. Dance a little, laugh a lot, swap stories and make friends who will give you the real Meru, the kind no guidebook has. Entry and drinks are at your own cost. Meals: Breakfast in Murang’a, lunch in Murima, dinner in Meru. Overnight in Meru.

Day 2 · Flavours on the road home

Day 2: Slow mornings, aromatic rice & goat choma After last night, the mountain can wait. No sunrise to chase and no early wake-up call. Sleep in, take a slow breakfast at the hotel and let the morning come to you. Then we make one call: our resident Meru plug, keeper of the finest ndumas in town. Nduma, the velvet root of the highlands, arrives soft, earthy and gently sweet, a Meru comfort food with serious bragging rights. Take a bite and understand why locals have never let it go. If you feel like stretching your legs before the road, wander the miraa market, a buzzing scene of bundled green stems and busy traders. Then hit the road, taking the Tharaka and Kathwana route home. Misty green gives way to wide skies, warm air and open, sun-baked landscapes, a very different side of the journey. Windows down, playlist back on, spontaneous roadside dance optional. Lunch: Ishiara goat choma Then to Ishiara, famous for one thing and one thing only: goat choma. Smoky, sizzling and perfectly charred, it is the kind of meal you remember long after the trip ends. Eat slowly, laugh loudly and refuel for the road ahead. With a full belly, roll on to Mwea, where the air smells of something wonderful: the home of aromatic rice. Step out, stretch your legs and pick up a bag or two for your next pilau at home. Your kitchen will thank you, and your family will pretend they did not ask for seconds. Then drive to Nairobi, full of food, stories and photos nobody will believe. Drop-off in the evening. Meals: Breakfast at your hotel, lunch at Ishiara.
